Netflix teams up with NASA to boost its live TV offering

Netflix and NASA announced a new partnership on Monday that will bring live space programming to the streaming service later this summer.

Subscribers will be able to watch livestreams of rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, and live views of Earth from the International Space Station, as well as additional content from NASA+, the space agency’s ad-free streaming app, which launched in 2023.

Until recently, most of Netflix’s live content was produced in-house or presented as exclusive live events, so partnering with NASA is a sign that Netflix is attempting to broaden its live programming.

Netflix has been gradually introducing live TV content to members, focusing mainly on stand-up comedy, awards shows, and special events. It also places a strong emphasis on sports, including WWE and a celebrity golf tournament. The most recent partnership was with TF1, which gave subscribers in France access to live sporting events, soap operas, and competition shows, such as “The Voice.”

This is not NASA’s first time partnering with a streaming service as it aims to engage space enthusiasts across popular platforms. In May, the space agency partnered with Prime Video to launch a live FAST channel. NASA also maintains a strong presence on YouTube and features NASA+ content for free on its website.
